Now if you've read Melissa's post on porn earlier this week you probably know who Sasha Grey is, if you don't I recommend this super handy vice doc on her. And if you can't be bothered to watch that she's basically the face of sex,kink and porn positive feminism or whatever. And while that's all cool and she's like made all her own choices completely independent from anyone else but herself she still sucks a lot.



By the way I italicised those words before cause Sasha Grey likes to remind you that she is in control at all times. And yeah it seems fucking great that we have this cool young girl which is in control of her life and who has made a sustainable career out of something she enjoys; like what's not to love about her??? Well she may seem amazing and like the icon for sex positive feminism most people forget that she's a porn positive porn star. And like I'm not shaming her as a sex worker but by being porn positive she's completely complicit in her own dehumanization. And even if she's cool with that she's creating a really harmful environment for vulnerable women.

She represents the whole 'consent is sexy' thing that's floating around some weird part of the internet. I get that she's cool with being in porn and she calls the shots but she represents a tiny minority of what the majority of sex workers call reality. Many female porn stars won't ever be able to call what she calls reality there reality. She sucks cause she represents this unobtainable dream which in the end is just gonna hurt so many more than it helps.

It's nice she's put herself out there but it's not really when her most popular porn videos involve her getting choked and beaten up. In that vice documentary one of the interviewers compare her self directed porn films to borderline snuff films. Snuff films are films where someone is actually murdered for the intent of arousal btw. She creates violent misogynistic films and markets them as women in control, women in control of what? There own dehumanization? There's a difference between a woman sexualizing themselves to the male gaze and for themselves and she definitely falls in the first category.

Idk I may seem like I'm just listing things I hate about Sasha Grey but she just normalizes abusive violent sex, I don't care that she made it over some creepy guy it's just as shitty. It's like the whole 50 Shades of Grey effect, Marketed as a female empowerment Christian Grey is borderline abusive. Well not borderline, he is fucking abusive and creepy. But like 50 Shades of Grey, Sasha Grey has bought this violent s&m kink shit into the mainstream and therefore has started to normalize abusive violent behaviour like ffs even Beyonce is on the soundtrack.

This whole new wave of sex/porn positive feminists are just hurting the women who are the most vulnerable by normalising extreme behaviour. It just feels like a lot of internalised misogyny to me? I really want to like Sasha Grey but she's just so meh.
